What driving license do I need?
What driving license do I need?
Updated this week

Once you have created your profile and entered your driving license category, only motorhomes and campervans that you can rent will automatically appear, because:

General Driving License Requirements

  • You must hold a valid driving license that is recognized in all countries where you plan to travel during the rental period.

  • The license must cover the category of the rented vehicle (e.g., a standard car license may not be sufficient for larger motorhomes).

  • You must have held your license for at least three years if renting in Sweden, Norway, Finland, or Denmark.

International Driver’s License

  • If you are from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the USA, you must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your national license.

  • MyCamper reserves the right to adjust this list based on regulations.

License for Larger Motorhomes

  • Most motorhomes under 3,500 kg can be driven with a regular B category driving license.

  • If the vehicle exceeds 3,500 kg, you may need a C1 category license, depending on national regulations.

Rules for renting a caravan

The type of caravan you can tow depends on your driving license and the weight of your towing vehicle. The key factor is the combined total weight of both the towing car and the caravan, which determines whether your B driving license is sufficient.

Driving License Rules for Towing in Sweden, Norway, and Finland

  • B Driving License: You can tow a caravan with a total weight of up to 750 kg. If the caravan exceeds this weight, the combined weight of the car and caravan must not exceed 3.5 tons.

  • Extended B License (B96): Allows a higher combined weight of up to 4.25 tons.

  • BE Driving License: Permits driving a car or light truck up to 3.5 tons and towing a caravan weighing up to 3.5 tons.

In Sweden, a transitional rule applies: If you obtained your BE license before January 19, 2013, you retain the right to tow a caravan without a total weight limitation.
